I want to say how sad I am by the passing of John Hughes. I’ve thought about all day. His movies and their soundtracks were the background to my teen years. The Breakfast Club and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off are still on every “Favorite Movies” list I have to fill out. There is nothing that can make me feel the way I do when Matthew Broderick is on that parade float singing Twist & Shout. I immediately want to throw up my hands and flip my hair around. A smile pops onto my face and a little bit of lust creeps into my heart for that cutie in the sweater vest (no disrespect to Sarah Jessica). My best friend Wendy & I must have gone to the mall to see that movie 5 times. Ferris was the coolest.
As much as I loved Ferris though, it couldn’t hold a candle to The Breakfast Club. Where FBDO entertained me, I felt like Breakfast Club was somehow about me. I could relate to it. The teenage years are all about the cliques, the groups, the personalities- and BC touched on it all. Plus, Judd Nelson was supersexy. ;) I really loved the fact that they opened up their hearts and saw each other as people. That they all came together, that they shared. My teen years were spent looking kind of like Ally Sheedy in that movie, but I had a personality that enabled me to get along with everyone that gave me a chance- weird clothes or not. I can also remember having long conversations with friends back then and how you never held anything back. We were so open with each other- so innocent, yet conflicted. I don’t think you could pay me enough to go back to the late 80′s. Well, I’d do a weekend with my friends- but definitely not school.
I stumbled across this post today from a girl- woman now, I suppose – who became a pen pal to John Hughes. This was so incredibly touching and I got more than a little damp around the lash area. I thought I’d share the link-

Rest in Peace, John. There was never anyone else like you. You got it. Kids in the 80′s/90′s were so lucky to have you.
And because I don’t want to head out to the weekend on a sad note here is a little something to leave you laughing. Disclaimer: this may be more funny if you are a wedding photographer.
